Depictions of animals are as old as mankind, and they have become a great inspiration to naive artists. An abundance of zoomorphic motifs in their paintings is often combined with prosaic subjects from rural life. Naive artists break the laws of perspective, filling the space of the picture with animals (Juraj Lauko, Ondrej Šteberl, Mária Žilavá, Anna Ličková, Jozef Lackovič, Rastislav Vrábel, Ján Hlavatý from Slovakia). The subject of fauna has also been reflected in allegorical compositions (Dana Poláková). The paintings of beasts and wild animals depicted by the Czech artists Jindřich Boska are executed in fascinating colours and illustrate spontaneous movement and power. The figures of animals executed in sculptural renditions oscillate between narrative depiction and symbolism (Štefan Siváň, Ján Hadnagy from Slovakia).
