Words & Pictures

The Slovak National Gallery is exhibiting eighty-seven prints created by David Hockney, perhaps the best-known British artist of his generation. Although prints are quite exceptional in his artistic production, they are an important contribution to 20th century graphic art. Hockney represents British artists who appeared on the art scene in the early 1960s and are largely associated with Pop Art. His early work was inspired by various literary sources. This is manifested in the series of prints on show: illustrations to Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress, to C. P. Cavafy’s Fourteen Poems, illustrations for Six Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, or a series of prints for The Blue Guitar created as homage to the poem of Wallace Stevens.
