The Myth of Juraj Jánošík or Jánošík Mania in Slovak Art 30. October 2005 - 26. February 2006 Curator Katarína Čierna Slovak Myth Opening: 29 October 2005, 3.00 p.m. The theme of outlaws is widely rooted in folk tradition and displayed in a number of art forms in Slovakia, enduring in various social-historical conditions for almost four centuries. As a counterpart to the project of Slovak Myth, the exhibition points to the interference of the myth of the Slovak hero Juro Jánošík. It draws attention to a broader conceptual and artistic background based on the co-existence of professional and unschooled expression, using the method of comparison and analogy – a conscious link, an intuitive affinity or a free interpretation of the myth. The exhibition reflects the creation of an idealised and hyperbolised myth and paraphrases the hero in the historical development ranging from the 18th century to the present (Romanticism, Slovak Modernism and Postmodernism). The works on view are from the collection of the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava, the Slovak National Museum in Bratislava and SNM – the Ethnographic Museum Martin, the Eastern Slovakia Museum in Košice, the Western Slovakia Museum in Trnava, the Orava Gallery in Dolný Kubín, the Moravian Museum in Brno and from the collection of the Radošina Naive Theatre, Bratislava. up | |
