The Brussels Dream
Czechoslovak Participation at the EXPO 58 World Exhibition in Brussels and the Lifestyle of the First Half of the 1960s

SNG, Esterházy Palace, 1st floor
24. September 2009 - 15. November 2009

Exhibition Concept: Daniela Kramerová, Vanda Skálová
Cooperation on Behalf of the SNG: Vladimíra Büngerová

The Brussels Dream presents an attractive probe of culture at the twilight of “the Dark 50s” and the dawn the “the Golden 60s”. It introduces EXPO 58 not only as a significant social crossroads and historical milestone in the world’s post-war history, but also as a synonym for the legendary Czechoslovak success demonstrated by its numerous awards (Laterna magika, Polyekran, works of Czech glass workers, etc.) and the absolute victory of the Czechoslovak pavilion at this world exhibition. This diverse and attractive selection of exhibits, especially from the area of applied arts, will introduce the contemporary design wave of the again topical “Brussels style”, the atmosphere at the beginning of the 1960s and popular culture at its birth. The repetition of the Brussels Dream exhibition (after Prague and Brno) will be updated in Bratislava by exhibits from the SNG and other museums and galleries in Slovakia, as well as from collections of the artists and private estates.
