Genius loci
July 2006 - November 2006

Curator Katarína Čierna

This exhibition presents the works of foreign artists inspired by their environment and the spirit of genius loci. Some of the protagonists derive their expressively simplified forms from the objective world while others are fascinated by the symmetry of the architecture of their native and favourite places. Their work blends fragments of reality with dreams, concrete observation with fantasy. The collection presents Nikifor, the major Polish naive artist who illustrates the simple architecture of his native Krynica, Jan Hruška, the Czech artist who creates clear views of fantastical palaces and cathedrals, and the Brazilian artist, Waldomir de Deus who depicts exotic countries in rich colours, as well as the work of other protagonists of naive art.
