This work belongs to a group of miniature altar triptychs created in Antwerp at the beginning of the 16th century (around 1500–1530) and is created in the style of Antwerp Mannerism. Apart from common features of this style (the fusion of Gothic and Renaissance forms, imaginative architecture, theatrical composition, elegant garment), the triptychs have the same central iconographic motif – The Adoration of the Magi. Only the scenes depicted on the wings are different, in this case it is The Nativity and The Annunciation. Jan Mertens Jr. (born around 1470 – died around 1527, Antwerp) was a distinguished representative of this style. The painter of this triptych from Banská Bystrica belonged to the circle of his disciples who often
repeated the schemes and details elaborated by their master. Unfortunately the work was in a very bad condition. The Slovak National Gallery bought the triptych from the Bishop’s Office of the Roman Catholic Church in Banská Bystrica. The panels were twisted and cracked along the width, original scenes were covered with numerous layers of paint scraped and abraded in places. There were also traces of unskilled handling. In the years 2003–2004, the painter Nora Hebertová restored all three panels to their former beauty. The present exhibition shows the
restored triptych of The Adoration of the Magi and also exhibits the photographic documentation and the process of restoration.
