David Hockney: Words&Pictures Four Print Portfolios 1961-1977
leads
Jane Elliott, Tate Britain, London
David Hockney made witty, innovative prints in counterpoint to his formally constructed painting. The lecture explores his ideas, techniques and innovations. The etchings, often autobiographical, emerged from his readings of the erotic love poems of Cavafy and Whitman, from narrative motifs in the fairy tales of The Brother’s Grimm, and from his understanding of the graphic language of both Picasso and Hogarth.
A slide talk will place the prints in the wider context of Hockney’s painting in the 60’s and 70’s, and consider his place in the 60’s avant-garde pop culture.
