Ukiyo-e
Japanese Colour Woodblock Prints

SNG, Esterházy Palace, 3rd floor
7. September 2006 - 5. November 2006

Curator: Martin Šugár

For the first time the public will have an opportunity to see a collection of eighteen Japanese colour woodblock prints donated to the Slovak National Gallery in 1992 by the American artist Sandria Hu. The term Ukiyo-e does not refer to the technique but to the subject matter of exhibited works. Although it originally referred to the world of transience, later it became associated with a generally hedonistic way of life. The single-sheet prints were created by seven artists from the late Edo Period (1603-1868) and the beginning of the Meidzi Period (1868–1912), the time of the greatest boom and a gradual decline of this specific art technique, which influenced European art in the 19th and the 20th centuries.
