The exhibition project entitled the Hero presents one of the key themes (almost a category) in art history. In fact it reacts to our longing for heroes, which expresses our desire for ideals. Apart from designating the theme, the project also manifests shifts and transformations within this category, brought about by the media coverage of the contemporary period. It strives to show to what extent this subject is merely a romantic anachronism or whether our concepts of heroes transcend reality, and what forms they adopt. The wide scale of visual works (paintings, sculptures, photographs and films) on view attempts to elucidate the main theme in two conceptions – vertical (various themes) and horizontal (in chronological order). 19th century art was the key to the emergence of Slovak (visual) hero, whereas Modernists hailed the hero within the bounds of the Slovak myth as the hero of “ordinary day”. A specific period related to depictions of the hero in the style of new days – the hero constructor in Socialist Realism is also represented. The last group includes the works reflecting the emergence of the neo-modernist, Postmodernist and contemporary hero. However, the authors of this exhibition are not merely interested in this type of development in the context of art history. The sociological
development of this type was equally inspiring in designing the conception of the exhibition. Therefore the chronologically acquired material is classified into specific themes (e. g. hero and his performance, hero and his story, hero and his appearance). The conception focuses on the visual material of 20th century art and on a variety of art forms (painting, sculpture and photography) in an attempt to make use of the collection.
